Apparently the weight of love is proving too much for the Pont des Arts, Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor and the Pont de l’Archevêché bridges in Paris. Specifically the weight of the padlocks symbolising happy couples’ unbreakable love. Many tourists mistakenly believe this is a longstanding Parisian tradition, not realising the practice only migrated into Paris in late 2008 after affecting cities in Italy and Asia. The locks have since spread to at least 11 Seine bridges, the Canal Saint Martin footbridges, and to parks and monuments all over the city. The weight of the locks has broken the railings on several bridges and the locks are considered a scourge by many. Yesterday Mashable reported on the issue.
