1. “Les Miserables.” This film adaptation of the famous and long-running stage musical opened on Christmas Day 2012, but is still going strong because of awards-show buzz. And though the movie differs from more conventional films in that it is 100 percent sung-through, the overarching message of the movie is traditional: love is what gives life true meaning. The cast of is stellar, including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway. Existing fans of “Les Mis” will likely enjoy this film most, but anyone who likes a sweeping period drama with plenty of action amidst the romantic moments will find this film perfect for Valentine’s. 2. “Safe Haven.” The only film in this list of great valentines day movies to actually open on February 14th, “Safe Haven” stars Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough and is directed by famed director Lasse Hallstrom. This movie tells the story of a young woman who arrives in a small American town with a secret in her past. As she falls in love with a local widower, she is forced to open up about her life while she learns to trust the power of love to help her weather life’s ups and downs. A romance with touches of intriguing mystery, “Safe Haven” will satisfy the craving for a love story that isn’t overly sweet.
3. “This is 40.” This is another film that has been playing for awhile, but it’s definitely worth a viewing as a Valentie’s Day date. The movie revisits the couple Pete and Debbie from the blockbuster film “Knocked Up,” and finds them in their forties, long-married with children, and struggling to keep the flame alive in their relationship. Directed by super successful director Judd Apatow, “This is 40” stars Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann and Megan Fox. It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day movie for anyone who can relate to the way our lives sometimes fall into a rut after years of marriage, child-rearing and juggling the many demands of modern life. “This is 40” showcases Judd Apatow’s famous humor, balancing the funny and poignant for an entertaining romantic comedy.
4. “Look of Love.” Watch for this charming love story in 2013. Starring Annette Bening and Ed Harris, “Look of Love” tells the offbeat tale of a heartbroken widow who falls in love with a man who looks remarkably like her dead husband. With plenty of romance balanced with a hint of the supernatural, “Look of Love” is engrossing and entertaining, the perfect Valentine’s Day movie.
