apartment

It is the time of the year when Brisbane folks trace their cultural and historical roots. The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland  is commemorating more than a hundred years of promoting agricultural and industrial resources of the State of Queensland. Yes! a big wow right there, ladies and gentlemen.

So, what better way to celebrate with them than advocating for the environment, right? We suggest making your very own mini garden!

First, hold your horses down. These three simple do-it-yourself projects are for our mates living in an apartment. But, these will perfectly be fine for those who have wide spaces at home. Let’s start the ball rolling.

Terrariums

What you need?

  1. Sand
  2. Large stones
  3. Pebbles
  4. Charcoal (activated)
  5. Moss
  6. Soil
  7. Plants
  8. Ornaments and decors

What to do?

While this terrarium is having a beach vibe, you are at liberty to choose the theme you want for your project.

The secret of creating beautiful terrariums is to layer them properly. It will be easier and aesthetically good if you choose clear containers.

Step #1: Lay the sands at the bottom of the container. This is, however, optional. You can directly go to step 2.

Step #2: Put the large stones. Some use sea shells (make sure owners have discarded them!). These will provide breathing space and air.

Step #3: Scatter pebbles around the big stones. Choose the colorful pebbles to add life to your project. Don’t use too many pebbles to allow drainage for water.

Step #4: Add a layer of charcoal. The charcoal sponge up moisture, removes odor and filters the water. Some homes use charcoal in their fridge to rid of odors. It does the same thing on terrariums.

Step #5: Lay down the moss. Moss is great water absorbers. It is, therefore, important that it is placed below the soil.

Step #6: Pour in a generous amount of soil.

Step #7: You can now place the plants on the soil as well as your chosen decorations. Do not crowd them too much, though.

Hanging planters

What you need?

  1. baskets of different sizes
  2. Rope
  3. Scissors (strong ones)
  4. Nails/ hooks
  5. Hammer
  6. Soil
  7. Plants

What to do?

Remember that you are free to choose whatever materials to prefer.

Step #1: Insert the rope on the small openings of the basket. Tie the rope near the bottom of the basket to hold them up. Thread them through each basket, leaving 5 inches before the next basket.

Your planters do not necessarily have to be baskets. Some projects use mason jars, fish bowls, and cans. But, it is easier to thread the rope on baskets.

Step #2: Hang the planters anywhere you prefer.

A piece of advice, though, plants need sunlight. So. you better hang them near the window where they get enough sunlight and shade.

Step #3: Put soil in your baskets.

Step #4: Arrange the plants and flowers on the soil inside your basket. There are many online flower delivery in Brisbane offers a wide selection of different plants and flowers to grow in your planter. Find inspiration here.
